It’s all about the Data

IT projects need quality verfication with test data

Today, nearly every IT project requires quality verification. But organisations cannot effectively evaluate IT solutions because they do not have the test data available to do so. Therefore creating such data manually can be quite tedious and is a time-consuming process.

What is Test Data?

Testing means running tests or exercising the code to run such tests so test data will be a requirement. This will consist of records which contains information that can be used to evaluate the system. Testers can create test data manually, by using an UI or via an automation tool. To summarise test data is a collection of data records that are used to evaluate or exercise the database, web server and system logic.

But What if there was a Third Option?

Production data can be a reliable source of data in testing systems, but it may cause some issues such as:

  • Legal compliance with GDPR guidelines (as production data cannot be abused).
  • Authorised individual access to sensitive financial or other data.
  • Data integrity within a multi-system (multi-database) environment.

This post describes how to use production data to run tests without causing any of the above-mentioned problems. It shows how to use production data to enable automatic test data preparation with anonymisation for automated testing in the CI/CD pipeline. It also describes manual testing within an ecosystem called TDM (Test Data Management).

What is the solution?

So, how can the process be delivered? This can be achieved by using Soflab’s proposition namely Soflab GALL (Global Anonymisation Linked Loader). GALL has been created by our in-house team of experts, who have conducted many projects relating to comprehensive testing of environments in addition to deployments in the Business Intelligence domain (BI)

The solution enables programming and testing teams to use databases containing credible information, that is secured by anonymisation, while maintaining its consistency. It also allows for the pseudonymisation and exercising the right to be forgotten in non-production environments.

The main question is whether to prepare test data manually or automatically. The next question being is it profitable to implement tools to prepare test data based on production data? Manual test data preparation can be performed in non-repeatable processes. Where manual test data creation is not too complex it is easier and quicker to execute.

When creation of low-complexity test data is a cyclic process, it can be more profitable to implement automated test data preparation. Test data becomes more complicated in areas such as banking and telecommunication systems, where testers encounter specific test cases. When creating such test data from scratch it can be difficult to achieve within the planned test execution period.

In such situations, production data can then be modified by scripts that will anonymise any sensitive data. These processes can be somewhat time-consuming without having the appropriate tools to hand. Soflab’s solution allows the preparation of appropriate anonymisation rules and copies of the anonymised production data.

A typical example

An insurance company must evaluate the process of renewing an individual policy for a group of customers with a specific additional product. Based on test requirements, hundreds or thousands of similar anonymised records can be generated for manual and automated testing. This is based on production data meeting such criteria even if there is only one record that meet this criterion.

Due to anonymisation rules the generated data look like real data as first names (first names are still first names), surnames, policy and identification numbers also meet the validation criteria. Additionally, testers can maintain data integrity in complex multi-system and multi-database environments. The process of preparing data can be scheduled to run on demand or called by an API (Application Programming Interface).

Soflabs’ GALL solution ensures that only authorised individuals have access to sensitive data. One of its roles is that it prepares rules, implements anonymisation of algorithms and performs algorithm tests with data preview. Another role that it performs is the system can schedule and run previously created rules without access to production data. The anonymisation process is irreversible.

Soflab’s GALL can fulfill specific GDPR guidelines such as the right to be forgotten. Therefore it has proven to be very effective at creating test data from production data. As a result, GALL has been incorporated into the TDM (Test Data Management System) where it can comprehensively manage the creation of test data in test environments.

Test data in TDM is created using GALL and other tools. This is achieved in TDM full coverage of test data preparation for different tests. It happens by utilising GALL via API, automated tests during “test data exhaustion” and does not stop. GALL on demand supplies the test environment with a new set of test data to meet the specified criteria.

In developing the GALL solution, Soflab have met and exceeded the challenges that relates to the use of production data. This is important for the generation of test data such as GDPR guidelines, access to sensitive information and the integrity of data. It can manage large-scale test data in complex environments using anonymised production data which has made the validation process much faster.

Time needed for testing is an important factor as organisation’s consider time to market to be one of their most critical KPIs. So how can they further improve their time to market strategies? One of the first steps is to understand what is required to improve the situation. Second step is to develop the correct test data strategy. The third step is to use the appropriate tools to create, generate and distribute the resultant test data.

E-Commerce solutions

E-commerce more important than ever

But without the necessary experience you might pay twice in the end.  The following approach is from our partner 7DEVS.co in Ukraine. It has proven to work particularly well, seamless and future-proof:

We use Node.js as a primary language because it is supported by AWS. It is the most used programming language across all platforms. It is the fastest growing community over the last 10 years. At the same time, the vast majority of ruby backend packages (gems) are not supported.

We use AWS solutions because this guarantees high performance at minimal cost. It eliminates the need to hire system administrators (DevOps) to maintain the environment.

Using React as the Front-End framework allows building app-like websites (smooth, seamless transition between pages. There is no page reloading when browsing different solution sections). React.js + Node.js is a strategically beneficial combination. It is fundamentally the same programming language (Javascript), as a result there will be no need to support different languages and hire many diverse skilled engineers. Teammates will be knowledgeable in the same language, but in different frameworks. Therefore their approach will be clear to each other as they will be following the same principles and rules of the language.

We use Shopify instead of WordPress as it is a SaaS solution vs. ‚Box Solution‘, which requires installation on a bare metal server. That means that consumers will get the most recent updates. No complex updating process (=no additional development after time) will be necessary. Also, it uses React and has a set of libraries to simplify the development process.

If you are planning an E-commerce project please contact us. (E-Mail: info@hgh-innovation.com Tel.: +49 89 20087181. We will be pleased to discuss details and develop the best solution for you.

For HGH Innovvation GmbH, one of the leading agencies for outsourcing of software development in Munich this is a daily reality and thanks to HGH Innovation GmbH many companies find reliable software developers and other experts in the IT strongholds of neighboring countries in Eastern Europe like Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic as well as in India. The experts at HGH Innovation GmbH have more than 12 years of experience in testing and recommending outsourcing partners and they pass on their knowledge to companies in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and throughout Europe.

Why HGH Innovation?

Using the service of HGH Innovation GmbH has many advandages. Other than HR consults HGH Innovation does not cost you anything. Their service is completely free of charge.  In most cases there are several candidates to choose from and trial periods and tests minimize any risk for the customer. According to Heinrich Hess, Managing Director of HGH Innovation GmbH especially there is a change in mindset of most companies. Until now many had been reluctant to outsourcing. But recently there is a sharp increase of demand. The collaboration with remote teams is now easier than ever before. Tipps für Start-ups

90% aller Start-ups scheitern.

  • Designer: UX/UI Designer, Product Manager
  • Entwickler von Prototypen: Engineers/Devs
  • Freelancer und selbständige One-Business Bosse
  • Berater: Selbständige Mentoren und Coaches

Outsourcing through HGH

Nearshoring as a long-term success strategy

Be more successful with the right nearshoring partner

In cooperation with our long-term partners we from HGH Innovation GmbH are offering individual solutions for medium sized enterprises, especially software companies. In this context nearshoring of software development has been extremely successful for all our clients.

„In close cooperation with our customers we arrange software development teams with the required profiles. Then the team will work remotely but perfectly integrated into the customer’s processes and teams. Typically our teams work for 5 years and longer as a perfect complement to the customer’s inhouse team.“

Through our longterm strategy and the excellence of our software developers we have been able to build an excellent and trustful relationship with our customers. Because of the good experience with us many of our customers are increasing the size of their „remote dedicated team“ with our partners over months and years. As an example there are customers who had started with just one or two developers and who are working today with 20, 40 or 60 of our best people.
Because of this experience our partners are the ideal choice for software companies who grow fast and who need a strong and experienced partner to react fast to the increasing demand of experienced software developers.

In this way our nearshoring service is helping our customers with their digital innovation, it is opening the access to the best software developers in the market, it is securing competitiveness as well as the access to the newest technologies. As a consequence of nearshoring the satisfaction of our customers‘ inhouse teams is increasing. I am pleased to answer any further questions and additionally we are offering a free-of-charge one hour web conference to consult you with the best solution.

Outsourcing through HGH

Why are so many companies reluctant to outsource software development?

5 reasons why many companies do not like to outsource their software development

Since more than 16 years we from HGH Innovation GmbH are helping German and European companies with outsourcing and nearshoring their software development in order to be better, faster and cheaper than their competitors.

  1. Many of our customers are afraid of a conflict with their staff. With the right strategy nearshoring can free their employees for more important and more strategical tasks and nearshoring partners can help to remain competitive and save existing jobs.
  2. Even today especially German companies are quite old-fashioned and still want their own staff sit in the office. They want everybody’s physical presence in order to make sure that everybody is actually working during working hours.
  3. The biggest problem in german companies is missing english language skills. We could not believe this but in fact many software engineers just do not know enough english in order to be able to work in an international team. When we had a closer look we found that although some software developers do have good language skills the inhouse team as a whole is not able to follow discussions in english, which is of course creating a big problem for the daily communication with a remote team.
  4. Many company directors do not outsource software development because they are afraid of a breach of the confidentiality by the remote team. In our experience confidentiality can be covered very well by legally certain and efficient NDA clauses. Also it is better to chose a nearshoring partner who does not have an obvious conflict of interest by developing and selling own software solutions but who is only concentrating software development as a service.
  5. Last not least we often find companies whose CEOs are convinced that only local staff can do the job and that they are more expensive but far better than software engineers from other countries. Well, this is just complete nonsense and you cannot really believe that your own team has more skills than the combined knowledge of the wold’s best software developers.

As a conclusion we can say that especially in the software industry it is mandatory to include nearshoring competence in order to remain competitive and on top of the technical development. An agile approach enables the inhouse staff to work seamlessly with their new remote development partners.

Disruptive Technologies can kill your business in record time

„Company owners never realize that they might be bancrupt in less than one year if they do not react immediately“

Heinrich Hess, Managing Director of Innovation Consultancy HGH Innovation GmbH, München

Change to German – Wechsel in deutsche Sprache

What does „disruptive innovation“ mean?

Disruptive innovations  arise from the lower end of the market and from new markets. For the established companies they appear completely unexpected!  And disruptive innovations have another very unpleasant attribute which is that they appear kind of „carmouflaged“ and are barely detectable. In the beginning they are so small that they are not even visible and even when they become visible they seem to address such a very small market so that they seem to be completely uninteristing.

It can happen very fast

After a certain time, however, things are often changing dramatically. With a phenomenal growthrate existing markets, products or services can be completely or partly eliminated.

At first weaker but suddenly very strong

At the beginning of their development disruptive technologies are often still inferior to established products. As an example USB flash storage devices are still inferior to HDD with regard to capacity, reliability and price. This is why for the time being PCs still contain HDD rather than flash storage. But this can change rapidly.

Analog cameras and companies like Kodak were amoung the first victims

In case of analog cameras the short fight has been decided in favour to digital camaras many years ago.  Also in this case digital cameras could at first not yet convince with regard to resolution and picture quality. Resolution of less than 1 Megapixel seemed to be a very big disadvantage in comparison to the classical analog cameras. But very soon the huge advantages of this technology became obvious: results could be checked immediately,  snapshorts could be taken without any limitation and free of charge and pictures could be stored digitally or printed without any further delay. In the meanwhile the picture quality has been improved so much that digital cameras have replaced analog cameras nearly 100%.

„Most companies are not aware that they can go down at any time!“ Heinrich Hess von HGH Innovation GmbH-München

„We are surprised how naive leaders of big enterprises are when judging the risks of their company“, says innovation expert Heinrich Hess of HGH Innovation GmbH in Munich.  But can disruptive innovation be prevented? Hess‘ answer is clear: „No, unfortunately not! In case of a combination of  circumstances disruptive innovation with all their negative implications cannot be prevented!“

More security through innovation consulting and analysis

More security through innovation consulting and analysis

Some more examples of recent disruptive innovations:

  • Weight watchers loosing market share to smart phone apps offering cheaper or free of charge solutions
  • Car industry loosing sales by Carsharing
  • Piano teacher over skype
  • Navigation devices replaced by apps
  • Newspapers replaced by online services
  • Heartfrequency devices replaced by apps
  • Radio replaced by webradio
  • House- and energy controll by apps
  • Games CD replaced by online games
  • Language courses replaced by online apps
  • Travel guides replaced by online apps
  • Cooking books replaced by online apps
  • Books replaced by e-books
  • Bank employee replaced by online banking
  • Realestate agents replaced by online apps
  • Construction of prototypes and more by 3D Printers
  • Calculator replaced by smartphones
  • ….. and millions more…..

What can be done against disruptive innovations?

The first step is to become aware of the actual or potential disruptive innovations in their market. The consultants from HGH Innovation GmbH are constantly scanning the markets and can give important hints for the newest developments in specific industries. In close cooperation with their clients they analyse the situation and check their specific danger potential. The side effect is that through this process new developments can be initiated which improve the competitivenes and the chances for survival in the forseeable future.

In some cases companies could be saved by investing in exactly those  technologies which were threatening their market position.

Problems with emails?

hands-545394_960_720Problems with emails?

Most of my business life I have been dealing with emails. Sure, emails seem to simplify and to accelerate our daily work. However, these daily mistakes can easily offset all of the savings:

Loss of working time

If employees are using emails as they like and no clear rules are established about the how and when to use emails, this will inevitably lead to a huge loss of working time. Global studies estimate the lost time with several billion hours!

Loss of efficiency

Being online all day long and being available by smart phone will inevitably lead to loss of efficiency during regular working hours.

Mental fatigue

If your action is mainly controlled by incoming emails you will get tired. Constant interruptions by incoming emails increase the risk of burnout.

Mistakes and misunderstandings

Emails are very often misunderstood. As a matter of fact, misunderstandings in emails happen very frequently and are normally avoided in direct conversation.

Emails bypass rules and regulations

Hierarchies have not been set up accidentally. Who is reporting to whom? Emails often ignore all existing rules and use the shortcut. This can create a lot of damage.

Case by case instead of organisation

Emails often lead to deciding case by case instead of using established processes. This is not only more time consuming but will lead to more mistakes!

Decreasing social competence

People who are communicating electronically are losing their social competence and their ability to interact with people face to face!

Things take much longer

Projects managed by emails will take longer and require more manpower. Some problems should be solved in a 5 minutes meeting instead of dragging along per email for weeks.

Emails often lead to a loss of priority

People are losing a feeling for priority. The urgent message in our mail box is treated with a higher priority than the really big issue.

Writing Emails does not mean you are working

We experience a loss of reality. Employees are sending out dozens of emails and think they work. Which is the benefit for the company? How productive are emails? How do emails rank compared with meeting the person in reality?

„Getting this email out of the way“! This is what it is all about. This is why the tendency is to delegate it instead of solving the problem yourself.
